October 2nd, 2010 (Yakima Speedway, ASA Member Track, Yakima WA) – Canadian Shane Harding bested father Pete Harding for the pole at Yakima Speedway for the first day of the Fall Classic. Yakima Speedway proudly featured the best drivers on the West Coast for the 23rd Annual Running of the Fall Classic. Shane Harding set a fast time of 18.779. Brandon Riehl and Gary Lewis put on an exciting show racing side by side to the checker flag in which Brandon Riehl took home the win for the A Trophy Dash and Dan Obrist won the B Trophy Dash.

The Fall Classic structure is very unique. Although the field qualifies, they also run qualifying races to set the inside and outside rows for the main event similar to the twin 125’s that are run at the Daytona 500 every year. This gives an advantage to those drivers that may have had a poor qualifying time and give them the opportunity to capitalize in the qualifying race. Newly crowned 2010 Yakima Speedway Track Champion Owen Riddle won the first qualifying race placing him in the second row behind inside pole sitter Shane Harding and Garrett Evans won the second qualifying heat placing him outside second row behind Pete Harding.

In the last chance qualifier Super Late Model Main Event 16 cars started but only the top two earn the right to transfer into the 200 lap feature main event on Sunday. Dirk Stevens and Mark Sundberg started on the pole. Stevens quickly jumped out to the lead.  On lap 10 the first caution came out when Quint Whitman spun out on the backstretch. On the restart Randy Marshall Jr who had been racing in the fourth position passed Mark Sundberg and Rick Suran three wide to take second behind Dirk Stevens. No other cautions would take place and leaders Dirk Stevens and Randy Marshall Jr. transferred into Sunday’s main event. Both Mark Sundberg and Rick Suran were awarded the Promoters Provisional’s and earned the final two starting positions.

The Northwest Alliance Pro 4 Late Model Touring Series made there second appearance as Yakima Speedway played host for their 2010 Season Championship. Ken Chandler won set fast time with a 19.976. Rob Powers won the B Trophy Dash, and Steve Thompson won the A Trophy Dash.

In the main event Steve Thompson, who was in the top 5 in points brought out the first yellow flag of the 100 lap main event when his car lost power on the track. The second caution came out on lap 15 when Robert Golden’s car caught on fire bringing him to an immediate stop. The Yakima Speedway track crew was able to get the driver and douse the flames before any damage was done. Kurt Madsen, the current season point’s leader, led the race until lap 19 when John Grosvenor and Rick Thompson would both make the pass and claim first and second position. On lap 34, oil on the track would bring out the next caution and red flag the race. On the restart, current leaders John Grosvenor and Rick Thompson worked their way through lap traffic making aggressive moves. Rick Thompson utilized two lap cars coming out of turn four and passed John Grosvenor for the lead on lap 48. The lead would be a short one as he started slowing down due to engine failure allowing Craig Forney and Ken Chandler to pass with one lap to go until the 60 lap 10 minute break and race each other for the lead with Ken Chandler prevailing.

After the break in which teams were allowed to make adjustments to their cars, Craig Forney and Ken Chandler raced side by side through turn four. Ken Chandler would go high allowing Craig Forney to keep the inside groove and take the lead. On lap 68 Kurt Madsen who was running for the championship lost a right front tire and went off the track between turns three and four and would have to come in for a pit stop.

On lap 78 Craig Forney was still in first followed by Ken Chandler and Bud Rumsey. With all the leaders again weaving through lap traffic, Bud Rumsey would move to make the pass on Ken Chandler, the two got together and both spun out bringing out another yellow. This caution moved Jeff Jones into second followed by Eric Kaas in third.

Kurt Madsen brought out another caution when he spun on the front stretch crashing into the wall. This would set up the finish for a green, white, checker. Leaders Craig Forney, Ken Chandler and Jeff Jones all raced to the 23rd Annual Fall Classic top three podium finish. Kurt Madsen finished in 13th position but went on to win the 2010 Northwest Alliance Pro 4 Late Model Season Championship.

The Street Stock class got off to a fast start. Josh Ingram won fast time with a 21.349. Jimmy Zorrozua won the B Trophy dash and Mike Easley won the A Trophy Dash. Mel Patnode and Gary Flammang both won heat races. Sunday the 24 car field will compete in a 75 lap main event.

Hobby Stock Division local racer and 2010 Track Champion Chris VanAmburg set fast time with a 23.288 and won a heat race. Don Klang won the B Trophy Dash as well as a heat race and Ben St. Mary won the A dash. The Hobby Stock 50 lap main event will kick off the 23rd Annual Fall Classic Sunday.
