Valdez breaks through for Sportsman victory at Yakima Speedway Yakima, WA (August 11, 2012)-Lucas Valdez broke through for his first main event victory of the 2012 season at his hometrack of Yakima Speedway on Saturday night as local racing returned to the famed half-mile.
In winning for only the second time all season, third-place points driver Valdez keeps the fight for the Burger Ranch Sportsman championship close as points leader Buck Noel Jr. fell out during the main event with mechanical difficulties while second-place Kyler Conduff continues to be in the championship mix with a runner-up finish on Saturday.
Terry Cook held an early lead in the Sportsman main event as Noel and Valdez battled for second-place during the early stages of the race. With Cook closing on lapped traffic, Trevor Flora lost the handle on his race car and spun in front of the leaders collecting Cook. The incident allowed Noel to take the lead after the restart with Valdez, Kyler Conduff and Tony Huffines chasing the division's defending champion.
Valdez closed to Noel's back bumper then moved into a side-by-side battle for the lead over the next 10 laps. With Valdez challenging, Noel suddenly ducked onto pit road with engine troubles moving the Tri-Cities native up to the front of the running order. From there Valdez held off a determined Conduff and Huffines for the win.
Don Klang and Morgan Morrison rounded out the top-5 running order for the Sportsman division.
Rob Allen brought an end to Chris Marang's recent dominance in the H&H Furniture Pure Stock division as he picked up the victory over Marang and Tim Hitchcock.
Allen cleared Kyle Wade for the lead after five laps of close racing then moved out to a sizable advantage over Wade, Marang and Hitchcock. Through a series of yellow flag restarts Hitchcock was able to moved into third-place and challenge Marang late in the going for the runner-up position, but, ran out of time and settled for third with Wade and Mike Denton closing out the top-5
Marang maintains his championship points lead over Allen as the division has one more month of racing left in the season. Hitchcock continues in third with Wade closing fast for the final position among the top-3 championship drivers at year's end.
Other winners on Saturday night included Cody Walker (NW Pro 4 Late Models), Josh Washington (Speedway Mini-Stocks), Thomas Benscoter (Sea Galley Bump-to-Pass) and Jeff Ball (CWI Security/EZ Credit Auto Sales Hornets).
Former Speedway hot shoe, Thomas Benscoter, returned to victory circle after many seasons as a crew leader for Buck Noel Jr. Over the course of the night Benscoter went between Noel's pit to get into a Sea Galley Bump-to-Pass race car for some fender to fender action. Benscoter showed no signs of rust as he trailed A Trophy Dash winner and the division's points leader, Josh Aquirre, then mounted a hard charge through the field to claim the victory over Aguirre and Shannon Davis.
Joe Stevens and Todd Nunn ran fourth and fifth respectively in the main event.
Josh Washington debuted his recently acquired Mini-Stock to a stellar performance as he nabbed a main event victory to go along with his A Trophy Dash win and a top-3 run in qualifying.
Jeff Ball bounced back from an incident in the last Hornet main event, held in late July, to continue his drive towards a 2012 championship. The 7-Eleven Hornet was fast throughout the evening when it counted over several challengers including Steve Hall who debuted a new car for class. When the dust settled George Jankowics, Hall and Ball had the crowd wanting more as they ran tight in close competition with Ball coming out the victor.
Yakima Speedway returns to action on August 25 with racing in the Sportsman, Mini-Stocks, Hornets, Bump to Pass, Pure Stocks and Late Model Sportsman.
